The Burien City Council voted on January 8, 2024 to elect Kevin Schilling to serve as mayor for a two-year term and Stephanie Mora for a one-year term as deputy mayor.

Schilling has served on the City Council since 2020 and previously served as Deputy Mayor. Schilling is proud to be a fourth generation Washingtonian, third generation King County resident, second generation graduate of the Highline School District (Aviation High School) and St. Francis of Assisi.

In his second term, Schilling has stated that he will focus on commercial economic development to boost economic activity, increasing the housing supply, regional partnerships with the Port of Seattle, and overall government accountability for homelessness services, drug addiction, and mental health service access. Schilling shared, “I’m excited to take this journey with you. Never hesitate to make your voice heard. Let’s build a better Burien.”

Currently in her first term, Mora has served on the City Council since 2022. Stephanie Mora moved to Burien with her family in 2000, and attended Sunnydale Elementary School, Sylvester Middle School, and both Evergreen High School and New Start High School simultaneously.

According to Mora, “Everyone deserves a city where they can thrive. I want others to be empowered and help themselves to have a better life in our beautiful, generous community.”

Burien is a council-manager form of government. Members of the City Council elect both the mayor and deputy mayor. Mayors serve two-year terms and deputy mayors serve one-year terms; both can serve an unlimited number of terms.
