Public Safety

The City of Burien is a contract city, meaning we contract with outside agencies for many essential services.

Burien Police Department

The City contracts with the King County Sheriff’s Office to provide officers, detectives, sergeants, and command staff for the Burien Police Department. The members of the Burien Police Department are hand-picked to serve the Burien community. Although they commit to serving Burien for a minimum of two years, several of our officers have served the community for more than ten years.

Burien/Normandy Park Fire Department

King County Fire Protection District #2 provides fire suppression, fire prevention, hazardous materials response, mutual aid response, and emergency medical services in cooperation with King County Medic One, the Valley Communications Center, and other related public services.

Emergency Management

The City works with the Burien Police Department, Burien/Normandy Park Fire Department, utilities serving Burien, and other community partners to plan, respond, mitigate, and recover from emergencies. The City’s Emergency Operations Center (EOC) consists of the City’s leadership team and police and fire department leadership. The city manager oversees the activation of the EOC during a disaster.

Animal Control

The City contracts with C.A.R.E.S., a nonprofit 501c(3) organization, to provide animal care and control services for the community. Pet licensing is managed by City of Burien staff.
