Burien's Vision

A vibrant and creative community, where the residents embrace diversity, celebrate arts and culture, promote vitality, and treasure the environment.

The Vision for Burien forms the foundation for the City’s strategic planning, policy, and operations.

In order to develop the Vision for Burien, the City of Burien convened a diverse group of community members to serve on the Burien Community Vision Steering Committee. The Steering Committee met monthly throughout the project to guide the public outreach, encourage other residents to actively participate, evaluate input received, articulate vision elements, and prepare a final recommendation to the City Council. The Vision for Burien was adopted by the City Council on July 11, 2011.

Comprehensive Plan

The Comprehensive Plan is based on the Burien Vision, an expression by the community of what the community should be in 20 years. The plan also reflects the goals and guidelines of Washington's 1990 Growth Management Act.

Burien's first Comprehensive Plan was adopted in November 1997 following months of town meetings, workshops, and public hearings. The plan has been amended several times since then, most recently in 2015.

Parks, Recreation and Open Space Plan

A Parks, Recreation, and Open Space Master Plan (PROS) plan. The purpose of the PROS plan is to provide guidance to the City in its management and development of park properties and recreation programs. This plan is updated every six years. The last plan was adopted in 2017.
