Community Center HVAC and Lighting Upgrades

The Burien Community Center Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) and Lighting Upgrades Project improved the energy efficiency and sustainability of the building by replacing the existing HVAC system with a modernized high efficiency system and replacing all existing fluorescent lighting with light emitting diode (LED) energy efficient lights.

Project Location

Burien Community Center, 14700 6th Ave SW

Project Overview

This project decommissioned the existing fan coil heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system, gas-fired boilers, and air-cooled chiller that were original to the building since 1970 and were at their end of service life. The system was replaced with a new Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) and Dedicated Outdoor Air (DOAS) HVAC system. Existing fluorescent lighting systems throughout the building were replaced with new LED lighting equipment. These upgrades resulted in lower utility use and cost along with improved building system performance and occupant comfort. The anticipated energy cost savings was approximately $9,150 a year. These energy efficiency improvements help reduce the building’s carbon dioxide emissions by 42,586 pounds per year.

Funding

Project construction and administration cost $1,803,046 and was funded by City of Burien ($523,141) and by grant sponsors: King County Parks ($500,000), King County Community Development Block Grant funding provided though the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development ($173,823), and the King County Parks Levy allocation to Burien ($606,082).

Project Status

This project was completed at the end of 2022.
