The Town Square Fountain has sustained substantial water damage in the control vault and the fountain’s electrical system, including pumps. Parks Department staff are in the process of obtaining quotes for repairs and replacement of electrical components. The cause of the water damage has been identified and it was not related to last year’s construction work.
There was no damage to any of the newly replaced fountain elements. Cause of the damage appears to be a water supply valve for the fountain, located in the park landscaping that had been opened by unknown individuals when the fountain had been in a shutdown, winterization mode. Steps are being taken to secure this valve from future unauthorized access. Based on the damage, estimates, and time to complete the repairs, opening of the Town Square Fountain will be delayed into June.
The Burien/Normandy Park Fire Department will be at Town Square Fountain on May 9 from 1:30 - 2:30 p.m to provide a water spray feature from their hoses. Families are invited to visit the fire engine fountain and cool off during this time.
City staff recognize that the fountain is an important and extremely popular attraction for the public during the warmer months and we are working as quickly as we can with equipment suppliers and contractors to get the fountain repaired.
