The Burien City Council voted on January 12, 2026 to elect Sarah Moore to serve as mayor for a two-year term and Hugo Garcia for a one-year term as deputy mayor.
Moore has served on the City Council since 2022 and previously served as Deputy Mayor.
"When we talk about Burien, we're talking about a Council-Manager form of government where the role of the mayor is to lift up that team, to lift up those seven people and bring out the best in them even when all of our bests don't coordinate perfectly with each other and what each of us wants is slightly different," said Moore. “I have the honor to work with all of you and I know that we are greater than the sum of our parts because we are seven opinionated, strong, smart, wonderful people and I hope if I bring that out in the next two years that it will be counted as a success."
Also in his second term, Garcia has served on the City Council since 2022.
“I think it's a very important, critical time that we have coming in front of us,” said Garcia. “I look forward to doing exactly what our mayor mentioned, which is to lift everybody up to do the best work that we can to serve all 55,000 residents, visitors, workers, and business owners here in the city of Burien.”
Burien is a council-manager form of government. Members of the City Council elect both the mayor and deputy mayor. Mayors serve two-year terms and deputy mayors serve one-year terms; both can serve an unlimited number of terms.
