Election of Deputy Mayor, Human Trafficking Awareness, Arts and Culture Grants, Local Government Organization Appointments
The Burien City Council reelected Kevin Schilling as deputy mayor, issued a proclamation recognizing January as Human Trafficking Awareness Month in Burien, heard a presentation on 2023 Arts and Culture Grant Fund allocations, and appointed members to local and regional government organizations.
Kevin Schilling reelected as Deputy Mayor
The City Council reelected Kevin Schilling as deputy mayor. The deputy mayor is elected by the City Council every year to serve a one-year term. In the absence of the mayor, the deputy mayor carries out the duties of the mayor.
Proclamation to Raise Awareness Around Human Trafficking Issued
The City Council issued a proclamation recognizing January as Human Trafficking Awareness Month in Burien. In international crime, human trafficking is second only to narcotics trafficking. Councilmember Cydney Moore read the proclamation.

2023 Arts and Culture Grant Allocations
Burien Arts Commission Chair Andrew McMasters shared that there were 10 applications submitted to the 2023 Arts and Culture Grant Fund totaling $38,650. Because the City Council increased the fund to $40,000 and provided an additional $20,000 in funding for Highline Heritage Museum for 2023, all requests were able to be funded in full with an additional $4,600 to be used for a rolling grant fund program throughout the year.
Councilmembers Appointed to Local and Regional Governmental Organizations
The City Council selected who will represent the City of Burien on local and regional governmental organizations, such as the 509 Gateway Project Joint Executive Committee, Burien LEAD Policy Coordinating Group, King County Cities Climate Collaboration, and the Burien 2044 Comprehensive Plan Advisory Committee.
