The Burien City Council is hiring a new city manager for Burien. Bob Larson has been serving as interim city manager since April 28, 2026.

The city manager is the chief administrative officer of the City and reports to the mayor and the City Council. The city manager is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the City, including appointments and supervision of all City staff; recommendation of policies, procedures, and ordinances; and the development of the City’s budget for the mayor and City Council’s consideration and approval.

The City Council directed Interim City Manager Larson and staff to expedite the search. The City hired GMP Consultants to assist in facilitating recruitment.

Recruitment Timeline

July 26, 2026: The City Council directed Interim City Manager Larson to begin the search for a new city manager.

August 6, 2026: City staff provided an update to the City Council on the proposed pathway for recruitment consistent with the City Council’s priorities.

August 17, 2026: A contract with GMP Consultants was executed to facilitate the executive search.

Week of August 23, 2026: GMP met with City Councilmembers and key staff to build the recruitment profile.

Week of September 14, 2026: GMP and the City officially release the approved profile and begin accepting applications.

Week of October 11, 2026: First review of applicants and selection of top semi-finalists for presentation to the City Council for review.

October 24, 2026: The City Council will review semi-finalists provided by GMP in an executive session and choose finalist candidates for a future interview with the City Council.

The month of November 2026: City will host a “town hall” for the public to meet the finalists. Following the town hall, finalists will be provided a tour of the city. Interviews with the City Council and key stakeholders will occur during a special council meeting. The final candidate will be announced after the interviews in an executive session.

January 2027: The new city manager starts.
