Great Burien Baking Challenge

This event is now over, but you can still enjoy the recipes from our Star Bakers!

About the Great Burien Baking Challenge

On your mark, get set, bake!

Think you’ve got what it takes to be named Burien’s Star Baker?! Each week we’ll be hosting a virtual baking challenge with a different weekly theme. Challenges will run Saturday through Wednesday each week. Judging will take place on Thursday and a weekly Star Baker will be named on Friday! Star Bakers will receive a gift card to a local bakery!* Baked goods will be judged on visual appeal and creativity.

To submit an entry, please send:

  • One image of baked good
  • One image of baker(s) with baked good
  • Recipe
  • Very short story describing baked good

We are pleased to have wonderful donors providing our “Star Baker” prizes! Thank you to our anonymous gift card bakery donor and baking judge Keli Sim DeRitis for donating a cooking class for each of our stars!

Week 1 Challenge: Cookies inspired by the theme “What I See Out My Window”

Winner: Kelsey Cabilin, “Butterfly Cycle”

Keli Sim DeRitis, baking challenge judge, said: "The story of learning about butterflies’ life cycles and actually watching them hatch was really wonderful. The cookies are beautifully made too."

Week 2 Challenge: Cake inspired by the theme “Celebrate”

Winner: Chelsey Hancock, “Celebrate Love and Kindness”

Keli Sim DeRitis, baking challenge judge, said: "This positive theme is indeed something to celebrate. We’ve all seen examples of people going above and beyond during this difficult time. The cake is beautifully designed and expertly decorated. Plus, who doesn’t love five layers of chocolate!"

Week 3 Challenge: Pastry inspired by the theme “Dream Vacation”

Winner: Leshawn Dandridge, “Southeast Asian Floating Market”

Keli Sim DeRitis, baking challenge judge, said: "The design is utterly unique, and its creation required several baking and confectionery skills. The attention to detail in the vegetables on the boats, the Lilly pads, and fish are amazing. It would be a shame to cut into all the loveliness, but we imagine it was delicious!"
