The City of Burien and Discover Burien are hosting their 14th annual Empty Bowls event to raise money for the White Center Food Bank and Highline Area Food Bank.

Since 2006, Burien Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services, Moshier Art Center potters, Discover Burien, and Burien businesses have worked together to host a popular community event that combines good food and handmade pottery to raise funds for local food banks. The event has raised close to $250,000.

Since in-person events are not permitted under state and local public health orders, the event organizers have transformed the January tradition to a new virtual event that is set to run January 15-29, 2021.

“We are excited to continue the tradition of helping our local area food banks during this pandemic year so that our neighbors most in need receive the care and attention they deserve and are not left behind," said Debra George, Executive Director of Discover Burien. "We appreciate all of the supporters who are adapting to this year’s virtual fundraiser and remain hopeful that we can raise the much-needed funding for these community programs.”

Community members can participate in two weeks of virtual activities by doing the following:

  • Donate to support the Highline Area Food Bank and White Center Food Bank.
  • Watch videos to learn more about the critical community service food banks provide.
  • Enter into a drawing to be an Empty Bowls Soup Judge in 2022 by sharing soup recipes.

“My husband, our friends, and I have been honored to volunteer for the wonderful Burien Empty Bowls event since its humble origins at Moshier Community Art Center so many years ago," said Dana Lasswell, Empty Bowls volunteer"It has blossomed into an incredibly successful annual fundraiser that brings our community together and provides funds that assist so many of our neighbors who are experiencing food insecurity. Everyone’s enthusiasm is truly heartwarming to witness.”

Empty Bowls events raise money across the country to combat hunger in our communities. The COVID-19 pandemic has caused a sharp increase in need at food banks.

“I am inspired each year by seeing the community come together for a common cause to ensure their neighbors have adequate access to food," shared Carmen Smith, associate executive director of the White Center Food Bank. "The funds from this event make a big difference to us, especially this time of year when we see support wane after the holidays. Last year’s donation of $12,500 (half of what was raised) provided nearly 6,000 meals to the community. We look forward to connecting (virtually) with you all again this year. Thank you for helping us keep the community well-fed.”
