The City of Burien is considering zoning code changes to help protect trees on private properties.
The current code regulates tree removal and requires replanting when it is necessary to remove unhealthy trees. However, our tree protections in the zoning code could do more to prioritize retention of large, healthy trees and increase canopy cover throughout the city.
Code changes are being studied to see how the City can protect and preserve large, healthy trees and making sure the trees are replaced when they must be removed.
The protection of trees on private properties in Burien is important for many reasons. Studies show that trees help clean air, reduce the effects of global climate change, reduce stress, increase economic activity, increase property values, and make our community more attractive.
