Jacob Ambaum
Park Dedication
Check out the new Jacob Ambaum Park, at SW 128th Street and Ambaum
Boulevard. The 1-acre park features Burien's first lighted outdoor
basketball court. It also has a large playground for young children, a
sandbox, and a picnic area with barbecues and restroom. A dedication
ceremony is scheduled for June 13 at 3:00pm. The park is named after the
German immigrant who settled in the area in 1902 and helped develop the
corridor connecting Burien with Seattle. Check out the video of the kids who
have already discovered the playground.

Mathison
Park
The new park known as Mathison Park
was officially opened and dedicated on Friday, September 15, 2006. Ted Mathison donated his five-acre property
to the City in 1999. In 2003, Eleanor Carver Nelson
and Dorothy Carver donated an important parcel that allows
the park property to connect between S. 146th Street and S.
148th Streets. A significant feature in the south part
of the park will be named in honor of Herman Peters,
grandfather of the donors, who was a pioneer in the Burien
area about 1890 and lived on the property until he died in
1949.
The
first phase of construction is complete and it includes a play toy, picnic tables, benches and the
first phase of the bicycle and pedestrian path that will
eventually weave through the park. Construction is
phased in order to in order to take advantage of
grants.

Seahurst
Park
Before
After
In 2005 the City of Burien and the US Army Corps
of Engineers (Corps) removed a 1,000-foot seawall to help
restore the near shore habitat for endangered Chinook salmon
at Seahurst Park in Burien. This is the first phase of a
long-term plan to renovate and improve Seahurst Park for
park users, animals and marine life. Construction began on
December 1, 2004 and the seawall removal project was
completed by the Corps on February 11th. Environmental
studies and design are underway for the next two phases of
the park renovation process. Re-vegetation of the
areas disturbed by the Corps’ work will take place this
fall. Completion of the trail and restoration of the
picnic shelter, benches and picnic table is scheduled for
2007.
Eagle
Landing Park
Eagle
Landing Park is one of the newest parks in Burien’s developing
park system. The
park has Puget Sound shoreline access, 247 feet of beach, 2
acres of tidelands, six acres of wooded uplands, an eagle
nest viewpoint, interpretive trail and a five car paved
parking lot. The
goal of the park is to “…provide an open space where
community education and access are in harmony with habitat
and critical areas preservation….” The park
entrance is located at the west end of SW 149th Street.
Eagle
Landing Park is open to the public. Park hours are
8 AM to Dusk.
The
park was officially opened in June 2005. Mayor
Gibb, Governor Lowry (Washington Wildlife and Recreation
Coalition), Martha Wyckoff (Trust for Public Land) and
Emelie McNett (Park Board Chair) were featured speakers.
Lowry, a longtime member of the Washington Wildlife and
Recreation Coalition, was the main speaker at the dedication
ceremony that attracted more than 50 people on the sunny
spring day. Following a brief ceremony, guests were
led on a tour of the path to the beach, which included a
stop at the eagle viewing area where they saw the eagles
that make their home in the tall trees that overlook Puget
Sound. Guests climbed down the 257-step metal stairway and
explored the pristine beach.

Map and Guide
in the King County GIS Virtual Map Counter
The King County GIS Center, in coordination with
Public Health of Seattle and King County, King County Parks, and the
cities of Burien, Renton, SeaTac, and Tukwila have produced a map/guide
to promote recreational activities within this region of the county.
This Trail Map has won an Award - The cities of Burien,
SeaTac, Tukwila and Renton received a state award for "Best Park & Trails
Map" on this collaborative effort. KCGIS Center cartographers worked closely with parks
staff to gather information on parks, trails, bike lanes, play grounds and
community centers. The guide side of the page displays information from each
city plus an amenities chart for selected parks or trails.
You can get your own copy by contacting Burien Parks, or
by stopping by the Roads Services map counter on the first floor of the
King Street Center
building. Or you can download and print your own version from the
King County
