Burien is located in the Puget Sound region of Washington, is the 10th largest city in King County with a population of 31,040, and is the 29th largest city in the state. It incorporated as a non-charter, optional Code City on February 28, 1993. The City is governed under the council-manager form of government. A seven-member council sets policy and hires the city manager, who oversees city operations.
Burien contracts for such services as police and public works maintenance. Special districts provide fire services and utilities. In-house departments include Finance, Human Resources, Parks and Recreation, Public Works, and Community Development. There are 62 regular employees, including full-time and part-time.

Benefits Information
The City of Burien offers a generous benefit package that includes medical, dental, vision, long-term disability, life insurance, and a pre-tax medical savings plan. Employees may choose either Group Health or a Preferred Provider (PPO) medical plan. Both plans are administered by the Association of Washington Cities Benefit Trust. The City pays 100% of the employee premium and 90% of the dependent premium. Premiums for the dental and vision plans are also 100% paid by the City. Part-time employee benefits are pro-rated.
All regular status employees participate in the Public Employees Retirement Systems plan (PERS), and a second retirement plan (401a) administered by the International City Management Association (ICMA). Regular status employees do not participate in the Social Security system. Employees also have the option of participating in a deferred compensation program in which contributions come solely from the employee.
Regular status employees earn 12 days per year of vacation and 12 days of sick leave. The City also has eleven paid holidays including a floating holiday. Vacation accruals increase beginning the fifth year of employment.

Burien Area Elementary Schools Seek Volunteers to Tutor Students in Reading
ðSeveral Burien elementary schools are recruiting caring volunteers interested in helping young children who are struggling with basic reading skills. Current volunteers include neighbors, parents, senior citizens, business folks and older students. Training and curriculum are provided. Juvenile Justice Volunteers Needed
The King County Partnership of Youth Justice is seeking volunteers from the Burien area to serve on Community Accountability Boards (CABs) that determine consequences for minor juvenile offenders in their community. Requirements include at least a one year commitment, ten hours of training one evening a month participation, and a non-judgmental attitude towards youth. CABs meet Tuesday evenings in Burien. A Highline Community Orchestra invites musicians to join them. Musicians from beginners to advanced are invited; no audition required. Public Access Organization Needs Community Board Members
Puget Sound Access is a non-profit organization with the purpose of providing community access television services for
South King County. All Burien residents can
become members to produce programming for
cable channel 77. As a non-profit
corporation, it is vital to have an active
and diverse Board of Directors made up of
members of the community that the non-profit
serves. The Board will have many
opportunities to affect the future of the
organization. It will be the responsibility
of the Board to approve policies, secure a
location, and supervise the executive
director. Community representatives will
serve two-year terms. The Board currently
meets once a month. Applications for Board

Join the Burien Citizen's Patrol

Volunteer Opportunities
The Planning Commission makes recommendations on Burien's future growth according to the city's comprehensive plan and land use documents.The Planning Commission meets on the second and fourth Tuesday evenings at 7:00 p.m. at City Hall.
The Business and Economic Development Partnership (BEDP) considers Burien's future economic development, programs and priorities. BEDP meetings are held every second and fourth Friday at 7:00 a.m. at Burien City Hall.
The Parks and Recreation Board makes recommendations regarding recreational programming and the acquisition, promotion, improvement, maintenance and use of city parks. The Parks and Recreation Board meets the second Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. at the Burien Community Center, 425 SW 144th Street.
The Arts Commission makes recommendations on the furtherance and promotion of artistic activities. The Arts Commission meets the fourth Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at the Burien Community Center, 425 SW 144th Street.ðð
