Vision for Burien

Vision for Burien

UPDATES

After several months of meetings, surveys and other feedback from the public, the Burien City Council adopted a visioning statement July 11, and City staff began applying it in its everyday business at City Hall.

Burien: A vibrant and creative community, where the

residents embrace diversity, celebrate arts and culture,

promote vitality, and treasure the environment.

Accompanying the vision statement are seven core values/concepts.

  • Community
  • Diversity
  • Environment
  • Prosperity
  • Education & Youth
  • Health & Safety
  • Governance

Introduction

The City is engaging in a community-wide effort to shape the long-term future of Burien.

Our community enjoys a rich and unique history that continues to define who we are today. We’re asking all our residents to help create a common, unifying vision for our city. The goal of the visioning effort is to provide the Burien community with a sense of direction and a framework for evaluating future policy decisions. The vision that emerges will provide a critical foundation for upcoming City planning efforts:
  • Comprehensive Plan Update
  • Transportation Master Plan
  • Parks and Recreation Open Space Plan
  • Drainage Master Plan

Vision Plan Process

The City has hired the team of Brian Douglas Scott - Planning and Urban Design, to facilitate a planning process that will engage and involve community members in redefining their vision for the future of Burien. A volunteer Steering Committee of Burien residents will guide the process through interviews with key stakeholders, Affinity Groups to identify top issues, Community Meetings to envision our future, and City Council Work Sessions to refine the final vision.

The project website is one avenue that will be utilized throughout the planning process to share information and gather feedback from the community. The site will be updated on a regular basis so please check back often.

Thank you for your interest in learning more about this important planning process. We look forward to your involvement as we seek to update our Vision! The City anticipates that the Burien's Community Vision will be complete by the end of June.
