A Community Center Yesterday, The Annex Today
The former Burien Community Center is now known simply as "The Annex". It sits next to a lovely, multifaceted park that includes a popular skatepark, basketball court, picnic tables, and open grassy spaces, and for many years was the site of Burien’s annual June Strawberry and Arts Festival.

Local teacher Tom Sahle helped raise the money for the skatepark and even did much of the concrete work himself.

Meeting Spaces
In the past, The Annex had meeting spaces for businesses, groups, and organizations, including nearly a thousand square feet of meeting rooms, a 1,650-square-foot conference room, a kitchen and 900-square-foot dance / yoga studio. It was a great place to hold a meeting, party, wedding, or special event.

After the City's recreation programs and offices for the Parks Department were relocated to the former Burien Library, portions of the Annex have been leased out to a variety of nonprofit organizations.

The Annex Auditorium
During four months in the fall, winter, and spring, the Auditorium is used on weekends for Burien Actors Theatre's productions. The Burien Actors Theatre, King County Recreation Division’s first in-residence community theater program, was established in 1979.

Burien Park & Highline Community Center
Following the City's incorporation in 1993, the City of Burien and King County negotiated the transfer of responsibility from the County for what was then known as Burien Park and the Highline Community Center. Newly hired City staff began scheduling programs for Highline Community Center beginning with the 1994 spring quarter. The facility's name was then changed to the Burien Community Center.

Policies on facility use and fees were finalized in September 1994, and for many years the Burien Parks Department, many senior programs and other City-sponsored activities were located there. The Burien Community Center began to show signs of its age however, and the Center’s roof was even damaged in the December 15, 2006 windstorm.

In 2011, the community center's operations were relocated to the former Burien Library building a few blocks away.
