The City of Burien is currently updating its stormwater and development codes to ensure that low impact development (LID) is the preferred method of site development and redevelopment in accordance with new regulations from the state. LID includes best management practices (BMPs) that you might be familiar with, such as bioretention and permeable pavement, and also includes measures to reduce impervious surfaces and restore or retain native vegetation, like using “skinny streets” and preserving stands of native vegetation on a site. By the end of 2016, the City of Burien will adopt a new stormwater manual, which will include mandatory use of LID BMPs for many development and redevelopment sites. The code update process will also include integrating new provisions into the codes to make the process of implementing LID more seamless with new development and redevelopment projects across Burien.
