Low Impact Development Code Update Project - COMPLETE

The City of Burien recently completed updating its stormwater and development codes to ensure that Low Impact Development (LID) is the preferred method of site development and redevelopment, in accordance with new regulations from the state. LID includes best management practices (BMPs) that you might be familiar with, such as bioretention (similar to Rain Gardens) and permeable pavement, and also includes measures to reduce impervious surfaces and restore or retain native vegetation, like using “skinny streets” and preserving stands of native vegetation on a site. As of December 31, 2016, all updates and changes related to this process became effective. These changes include the adoption of a new stormwater manual, the 2016 King County Surface Water Design Manual, which adds requirements for the mandatory use of LID BMPs for many development and redevelopment sites, and integrating new provisions into Burien Municipal Code to make the process of implementing LID more seamless with projects across Burien as well as removing existing barriers and obstructions to implementing LID.

If you would like more information on this process, or the specific codes that were revised, feel free to contact Dan O’Brien at or by phone at (206) 248-5538.
