RESOLUTION NO. 221

 

A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF BURIEN, WASHINGTON, OPPOSING STATE INITIATIVE MEASURE NO. 912 THAT CONCERNS MOTOR VEHICLE FUEL TAXES AT THE NOVEMBER 8, 2005, STATE GENERAL ELECTION.

 

            WHEREAS, the Legislature in 2005 passed ESSB 6103, increasing the gas tax by 9.5 cents (to be phased in over four years) for statewide transportation improvements; and

 

            WHEREAS, Initiative 912 qualified for the November 2005 ballot and would repeal the 9.5-cent gas tax increase enacted by the Legislature during the 2005 session; and

 

            WHEREAS, the City of Burien will lose $6.25 million designated for the SR-509/SR-518 interchange and SR-518 corridor improvements, $552,000 for 1st Avenue South Phase I, and $1.5 million for the WSDOT environmental work on Miller Creek; and

 

            WHEREAS, the City of Burien will lose Transportation Improvement Board grant opportunities which are crucial to the preservation of our City’s infrastructure; and

 

            WHEREAS, our neighboring cities will also lose sorely needed funding for the SR-99/Alaskan Way Viaduct and Seawall Replacement Project, and funding for the SR-518/SeaTac Airport to I-5/I-405 Interchange.

 

            NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BURIEN, WASHINGTON, DOES RESOLVE AS FOLLOWS:

 

            Section 1.  The City Council of the City of Burien hereby declares its opposition to State Initiative 912, which will be presented to the voters at the November 8, 2005, State General Election.

 

Section 2.  Effective Date. This resolution shall take effect immediately upon passage by the Burien City Council.

 

            ADOPTED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BURIEN, WASHINGTON, AT A REGULAR MEETING THEREOF THIS 3RD DAY OF OCTOBER, 2005.
