RESOLUTION NO. 169

 

A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF BURIEN, WASHINGTON, SUPPORTING KING COUNTY RURAL LIBRARY DISTRICT PROPOSITION NO. 1 LIBRARY CAPITAL PROJECTS BONDS - $158,000,000

 

            WHEREAS, The King County Library System is proposing a bond measure to make capital improvements to its library system; and

 

            WHEREAS, the bond measure will enable the King County Library System to upgrade and expand twenty-five (25) libraries and replace twelve (12) libraries; and

 

            WHEREAS, based on 2002 assessed values, using current interest rates and assuming the bonds fully mature within 20 years, the cost to the taxpayers in the library district would be approximately 8 cents per $1,000 of assessed value (approximately $24 a year for a $300,000 home); and

           

            WHEREAS, the King County Library System ranks as one of the four busiest libraries in the United States; and

 

            WHEREAS, a partnership between communities, schools, libraries and government is integral to thriving, active neighborhoods and the local economy; and

 

            WHEREAS, without the increased revenue needed to take action now, the Library system will not be able to meet future growth at the current level of service; and

 

            WHEREAS, the Burien City Council strongly supports libraries and quality educational programs and facilities for the community.

 

            NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Burien City Council urgently calls upon the citizens of the Burien community to support King County Library System Proposition No. 1 for Library Capital Projects for continued high quality library facilities.

 

            ADOPTED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BURIEN, WASHINGTON, AT A REGULAR MEETING THEREOF THIS 27TH DAY OF JANUARY, 2003.
