There are seven members on the City Council. They are each elected at large and serve four-year terms. Councilmembers' terms are staggered with three elected one odd numbered year, and four elected the next odd-numbered year. To be a candidate for office, an individual must be a registered voter and live within the city limits for at least one year prior to filing.
Every two years, the City Council elects a mayor from among its membership. A deputy mayor is elected for a one-year term at the beginning of each year. The mayor presides over city council meetings, and performs ceremonial duties.

City Council Meetings
The City Council holds business meetings on the 1st and 3rd Mondays of the month, study sessions on the 2nd and 4th Monday of the month, and committee meetings on an as needed basis. Business meetings and the Study Sessions
are being held in a temporary location while the
new City Hall/library is built in Town Square.
The meetings are at 7 p.m. in the Highline
School Board meeting room in the Educational
Resource and Administrative Center, at 15675
Ambaum Blvd. SW, just north of the interim City
Hall.
When a holiday occurs on a Monday, the council does not meet.
Subjects for Council consideration are listed on the council agenda. Business Meetings and Study Sessions are recorded and formal minutes prepared. City Council meetings are open to the public and citizens are welcome to attend. Citizens' comments are received at regular business meetings and during public hearings.
Televised Council Meetings
The City Council began televising its meetings in February 2003 on Cable Channel 21. The Burien Channel, TBC21, is programmed 24 hours a day with information on city meetings, projects, and parks and recreation programs and events. We also air taped meetings and programs of regional interest throughout the week.
