SPECIAL MEETING

 

Mayor McGilton called the Special Meeting of the Burien City Council to order at 6:00 p.m. for the purpose of naming citizen award recipients, and at 6:30 p.m. to hold an Executive Session to discuss real estate per RCW 42.30.110(1b).

 

Present: Mayor Joan McGilton, Deputy Mayor Rose Clark, Councilmembers Sue Blazak, Kathy Keene, Lucy Krakowiak, Sally Nelson and Gordon Shaw.  

 

Administrative staff present: Mike Martin, City Manager; Michael Lafreniere, Parks and Recreation Director; Scott Thomas,    ; and Christopher Bacha, Interim City Attorney.

1.      CALL TO ORDER

 

Mayor McGilton called the Study Session of the Burien City Council to order at 7:00 p.m.

Ruth Dickey:  spoke to Ready for K and a larger collaborative, Burien Early Learning.

LL:  reviewed the focus groups created to discuss school readiness in Burien.

LL participants wanted English as a second language classes, parenting classes.

Shaw: see framing started and ahead of schedule for Parcel 1.  Fischer:  right on schedule.

LK  voiced concern about graffiti and the advertising area by parking- who is responsible for maintaining.  Fischer:  manager of retail, or those who is using for advertising.  Managing still being determined.  LK  asked for consideration of materials due to possibility of graffiti at street level.

Keene:  noticed in all of these its almost equal to 1 – 2 bedroom condos.  Playing up to single young kids?  John:  more two bedrooms in this phase.  Typical mix.  Designed to be 50/50.

·        Staff has completed all inspections and finaled all homes in the Meritage Homes subdivision

 

·        The City has issued a notice to our consultants to proceed with the Final Environmental Impact Statement for Westmark/Emerald Pointe project

 

·        Parks Department has submitted a nomination for the AWC Excellence Award for the Senior Pet Grooming partnership between the department and Puget Skills Center

 

·        Parks Department has submitted a nomination for the WRPA Spjotlight Award for the Parks and Trails Map Brochure

·        Jury panel for the Town Square artwork selection process will meet on April 1

 

·        Arts Commission will sponsor a Burien Arts Summit on May 17
