Update on the Small Business Development Center – Zev Siegl

The SBDC is a cooperative effort of the cities of Burien, SeaTac, Tukwila, Des Moines, Port of Seattle, King County, Highline Community College and the US Small Business Administration.  The SBDC works actively with small businesses, 34 as of July, (6 in Burien) providing assistance for management and technical business affairs.

Update on the Export Promotion Program – Allison Clark, Export Promotion Coordinator

The Export Mentor Program is designed to nurture the exporting capabilities of small and medium-sized companies located in SW King County.  Allison said that 70% employment comes from small businesses.  A pilot program has been created setting up exporting-experienced companies, offering guidance and support, to companies new in exporting.  Currently there are 10-12 companies participating.

SeaTac Airport – Strategic Planning – Burr Stewart, Strategic Planning Manager

Established in 1911, the Port of Seattle is a special purpose government established to foster regional economic vitality, provide transportation facilities for cargo and passengers by air, water and land, and to provide a maritime homeport for the Northwest fishing industry.  The strategic planning for the airport is:

·        Airport/seaport vitality – making money/benefiting the community by creating jobs/protecting the environment/high density development

·        Economic opportunity

·        Public understanding

·        Regional transportation

·        Security

·        Environmental stewardship

·        High performance organization

Round the Table:

Mark Minium said the trucks hauling the dirt for the runway are speeding up and down the freeway.  Who can be contacted?

Doug Moreland – Doug said he has been passed by a couple of the trucks in his smaller car and he agrees with Mark about them speeding.

Clare Gallagher, Community Relations Manager for the Port of Seattle, said some of the trucks have been reported.  If anyone has a problem with the trucks give Clare a call.

Bob Ewing – Attended the Council meeting last Monday, August 9, and was impressed with the level of discussion.  Bob thinks it would be a good idea to start sending a Partnership representative to the meetings again and have them report back to the members.

Ryan Warnes – There is a possibility that all the Burien car dealers will be involved with the Farm Aid concert coming to the community.  Auto dealers have been asked to supply cars and the dealers will be mentioned in press releases, banners, and ads in their program.  This is great coverage for Burien.

Debra George – The Farm Aid Concert sold out in one day.

John Roberts – Wanted to mention what a great job Debra George is doing.

Nancy Damon – Today is the Chamber’s golf tournament.  September 16 is the Chamber’s grand opening at their new location from 4-6 p.m.

Adjourned:  8:30 am.

Next Meeting:  August 27, 2004, 7:00 a.m.
